Baby books always make lovely gifts for new parents, but sometimes it’s hard to decide what to buy. Do you go for a classic baby book like Goodnight Moon, Eric Carle’s enormously popular The Hungry Caterpillar, or something a little different? We’ve had the immense pleasure of stealing a sneak peek at two new baby books by Irish fashion designer Orla Kiely, Numbers and Colours, scheduled for release tomorrow (September 1st 2011).
Orla Kiely is better known for her gorgeous retro handbags, and more recently for her designer baby changing bags and light floral fragrances. I have to confess I was wondering how her stylish retro designs would translate in the world of baby board books, but was pleasantly surprised. The books are a pleasure to look through in terms of texture, colour and style, and really stand out from the other baby books you’ll see gracing the bookshelves at your local children’s bookshop. Orla Kiely’s books are unique, beautifully stylish, and make the perfect gift for your friend’s new baby, or perhaps as a lovely little first birthday or Christening present.
Our resident bookworm, Michelle, put Orla Kiely’s new baby board books to the test with her own children – here’s what she had to say:
Numbers by Orla Kiely is a really chunky board book for babies or younger children. Our 5 year old has speech delay problems and therefore enjoys using this book as much as Colours by the same author, as he knows his numbers and it helps him with his pronunciation on some of his words.
The cover is a retro orange colour and is a weighty book with a woven fabric texture, making this a really good companion to the Colours as they are both the same size and same design and feel. Each double page is colour co-ordinated with lovely retro illustrations – pleasing to the eye without relying on primary colours. The board book covers objects, animals and elements from nature, so has a wide focus.
Both are really lovely books, very durable and heavyweight, and slightly unusual because of the use of retro colours and patterns rather than the typical primary colours, which makes a refreshing change.
In all, Orla Kiely’s books are unique, beautifully stylish, and make the perfect gift for your friend’s new baby, or perhaps as a lovely little first birthday or Christening present.
Numbers and Colours by Orla Kiely are both available from Egmont UK.
