How to choose the perfect new baby gift

The buggy’s set up, they’ve found the ISO-Fix and plugged in the monitor. Baby’s arrival is near or already here and you’re looking forward to meeting a person who’s small enough to make a minuscule Newborn baby-gro look as big as an Eighties Sweater Dress. You need to find the right gift for this new bundle of joy and from tiny hats to chewable books, and there are almost too many things to choose from… Here are my tips for choosing the perfect new baby gift – one that the parents will genuinely appreciate!

Check with the parents

There may be a specific item they didn’t get round to picking out, or perhaps they’ve already been given 7 identical squeaky giraffes. Either way, they’ll be able to give you some ideas on what their baby needs.

Think ahead

That little bundle is going to start growing very quickly so I say look further down the road, and buy for when baby will be 6 months+. Look for a lovely outfit suitable for crawling, a cute pair of boots or soft baby shoes, teething aids and bright interactive toys. Below are some lovely new baby gifts we’ve handpicked from M&S Babyworld:

Make it last

Another option is to give a gift that will be enjoyed for years. Pick from children’s classics and get a box-set of books by Beatrix Potter, Roald Dahl, or C.S. Lewis.

Get stitching

If you’re like me and handy with a needle (sewing/knitting), a homemade gift is a sweet personal touch. Every baby wants to feel safe, secure, loved, and warm (and clean!). They can never have too many soft cotton hats, washcloths, and blankets.

Wrap it up

Give a gift that looks good in and out of the wrapping. Add some cute basic items for newborns to the gift/s you have and package it all together in a basket, a beautiful keepsake box, or – better still – do what I do and turn them into a “cake”! You can use baby-gros, bibs, nappies or even a hooded towel and some soft wash cloths for the different tiers.
