We’re off to see the wizard! Last year I somehow finagled my way into the secret Oz room at London’s Disney HQ and had a sneak peek at the storyboards, set design, trailer and costumes (oh, the costumes!!) for Disney’s new family movie, Oz the Great and Powerful. I was blown away… and not just by the rich detail of the costumes (but, man do I want that dress).
It’s been a very long time since I’ve been this excited about a film. I first saw The Wizard of Oz over 30 years ago, so the characters, the songs, the sets and the story have been so familiar to me my whole life… but because I was so little when I first saw it, I never questioned how or why the Wicked Witches became wicked, or how the Great Oz came to be. Embarrassing as this sounds, the idea of the characters having a back story was something of a revelation! Wicked is one such re-telling, bringing to life an imagined back-story for Glinda (The Good Witch of the North) and Elphaba (The Wicked Witch of the West) with the most incredible live show I’ve had the pleasure of seeing (read my Wicked review!).
Now with Oz the Great and Powerful, Disney takes us through a sumptuous recreation of the Land of Oz, from the perspective of the wizard himself. And I have to tell you, I cannot wait.
