The end of February marks half term for schools all over the country and, although the best thing on earth for kids, is often a time where parents find themselves shouting help! at least three times a day. If you live in Yorkshire, grab yourself a cuppa, tuck into a Fat Rascal and check out my Top 10 Half Term ideas…
1. Big Fun with Little Trains at the National Railway Museum
From 16th-24th February, the NRM in York has play areas and workshops for kids of all ages. Take part in the Chuggington challenge, play with toy trains, build some impressive Meccano models and ride on the miniature railway. You can even attend a ‘Signalling School’ to find out how the 100-year old signals work!
2. Horrid Henry’s House of Horror at The National Media Museum
From 16th-24th February, the NMM in Bradford allows your children to take part in a multitude of frightful activities based on the popular book series. Learn to draw, listen to stories, animate monsters, play dress-up and even meet Horrid Henry himself. What’s more, all activities are free!
3. Wild West Outlaws at Royal Armouries
From 16th-24th February, the Royal Armouries in Leeds is the place to go for budding cowboys and cowgirls! Featuring rootin’ tootin’ talks, demonstrations, films and crafts you can learn to throw lassos and pan for gold!
4. Family Steel Trail at Magna Science Museum
Between 16th-24th February, Magna science museum in Rotherham is the place to be on a rainy day. Pick up a quiz sheet and work your way around the museum solving clues and riddles for the chance to win some great prizes!
5. James Capper at Yorkshire Sculpture Park
From 5th January to 14th April, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in Wakefield is a great choice for kids who love science and the outdoors. James Capper is an amazing sculptor who bases his designs on mechanical machines and powers. Some of his sculptures can even walk, swim and climb mountains!
6. The Art of Useful Things at Harewood House
From 16th-24th February, Harewood House near Leeds is hosting an event based around useful tools. Head into the house and ground to learn about jelly moulds, watering cans and bird feeders, listen to talks, take part in quizzes and design your very own super-object!
7. Bird Brains at Fountains Abbey
During February half term, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal in Ripon are going wild about birds! Take a walk along the Bird Brains trail and take part in a host of craft activities. The ancient ruins, lake and gardens make a fantastic sunny day out for the whole family.
8. Family Fun Days at Scarborough Art Gallery
From 19th-23rd February, Scarborough Art Gallery is running half term fun in the most inspirational setting. Featuring a range of drop-in workshops, take part in painting and collage activities specially designed for younger children!
9. Jorvik Viking Festival
Over February half term, Jorvik Viking Festival takes over the city of York. With a range of academic, archaeological and historical events, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Learn all about the Vikings, their tools and their skills and encounter them one-on-one!
10. Calypso Cove at Barnsley Metrodome
At the Metrodome Leisure Complex in Barnsley, head to Calypso Cove this half term for hours of swimming fun! Walk the plank, take on Terror Torrent, slide your way down the slides and flumes and watch out for water fire from the Sunken Galleon! Fun for all the family is guaranteed at this pirate’s paradise.
