‘Wreck-It Ralph’ has destroyed the competition at the UK Box Office taking the #1 spot with a massive £4.5 million on its opening weekend. ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ took over double the weekend figure for the number 2 film, Les Miserables , ending its 4 week reign at the top spot.
This Academy Award® nominated heartfelt animated comedy, about a video game ‘bad guy’ named Ralph who tries to become a hero, out grossed all the other new releases combined this weekend with a healthy average per location of £5.6k.
The film has been getting fantastic praise from critics and adults and kids are rushing out to the cinema to see it despite the freezing temperatures.
Jonathan Ross says “Wreck-It Ralph is a masterpiece. An instant classic, up there with Toy Story and Toy Story 2. And even Toy Story 3…one of the very best from Disney Animation Studios. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll want to rush out and play video games in an arcade. Unmissable.”
Chris Tookey at the Daily Mail agrees: “Wreck-It-Ralph is witty, ingenious and entertaining, a technical and creative breakthrough.”
‘Wreck-It Ralph’ also opened at number 1 in the US box-office last year taking $49.1million making it the biggest Disney Animation opening of all time ahead of Tangled ($48.8) and all the Studio classics including The Lion King ($40.9). The film stars the voice talents of John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch and Jack McBrayer and radio and TV broadcaster Nick Grimshaw has a UK star cameo role in the movie voicing the character ‘Brad’ who features in the Hero’s Duty game world in the film.
