After a sensational run in North America and a hilarious series of Muppet spoof trailers, The Muppets movie comes to the UK at last this February. The preview screening of the new Muppets movie at the Empire Leicester Square on January 15th had our whole family buzzing with excitement and itching to see our favourite Muppets on the big screen for the first time in about 12 years.
The Muppets Movie Review
In the new Muppets movie, we meet a brand new Muppet named Walter, a sweet little ‘boy’ who feels the Muppet community is where he belongs. When his brother takes his girlfriend out to LA for their anniversary, Walter tags along in hopes of visiting the Muppets studio and maybe even meeting one of his heroes.
Things have moved on in the entertainment industry, though – the Muppets aren’t on the radar anymore, and their old theatre has been left in a sad state of disrepair.
While exploring Kermit the Frog’s office, Water overhears a nasty oil tycoon’s plans for buying the property and clearing the site to drill for oil. Realising that to save the studio they need to raise $10 million, Walter convinces Kermit to get Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the rest of the old gang back together for one last show – The Greatest Muppets Telethon Ever.
We won’t give anything else away or it will spoil the film – sorry!
Suffice to say that The Muppets had the entire audience giggling, guffawing and everything in between. It’s very, very funny, with just the right balance of dry humour and silly slapstick. The musical numbers are infectious and downright brilliant, including a host of favourites old and new, and the many celebrity cameos are very cleverly executed. We should warn you though, when we weren’t laughing, we were welling up – surprisingly even more so than at the War Horse premiere.
Most of us have known and loved these characters since our first ever experience of television, so they feel like family. When Disney weaves a story of their reunion, tests their friendship and lets little Walter grow up, it’s hard not to feel moved to tears.
Even now, 8 days after the preview, we still find ourselves bursting into song with slightly off-tune versions of the incredibly catchy “I’ve got everything that I neeeeeed, right in front of me”, and the kids keep on talking about their favourite scenes. And their second favourite scenes, and so on for hours.
All in all, a terrific comeback for The Muppets, a triumph for Disney, and an absolute must-see. In fact, I can’t wait to see it again!

The Muppets movie comes to UK cinemas 10 February 2012 and is suitable for audiences of all ages – even our 3 year old loved it.
