Joshua is a huge Gruffalo fan so when I spotted this children’s book by the author Julia Donaldson it was a must to come home with us and I’m so glad it did.
What can I say… it’s bright, the story jogs along in true Julia Donaldson style, it’s funny and sometimes quite repetitive, which I have found is the true success to a lot of our favourite children’s books at home.
Joshua loved the story line of the farm animals working together to foil the robbers’ plan to steal the prize cow. He enjoyed saying the noises the farm animals made and thought it was great fun when what came out of the animals’ beaks/mouths was maybe not what you would perhaps expect. This usually brought on fits of laughter and quite a few moments of uproar, so possible a book to steer clear of if it’s a quiet, quick, bedtime you are after.
A nice extra is the fun of looking for the glittery ladybird, who is the key character as it is the ladybird who overhears the robbers’ plan. Joshua loved touching the page as the ladybird was slightly raised.
I thought this book was a great success – any book that engages a child the way this book did is sure to be a favourite that will be read time and time again.
