Looking for ideas for Red Nose Day? Try these yummy and oh-so-silly Lookie Cookies, designed by 5 year old Madeleine for Sainsbury’s Comic Relief Cookie Challenge. Mummy helped with the baking, stencil design and some of the icing. Elliot helped by tasting all of the ingredients before they went in. The golden syrup was tasted several times, just in case.
I used gingerbread for my Lookie Cookies as it’s strong enough to wear as glasses (now there’s a phrase you don’t see everyday), but you can try any other favourite cookie recipe. There are lots of nice ones on the Sainsburys Live Well for Less baking site.

Below is the recipe, method, and step-by-step pictures to help you make your own Lookie Cookies. Please try them at home and let me know how you got on!
Recipe (adapted from 4 Food):
- 350g plain flour
- 2 tsp ground ginger
- 1/2 tsp ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- a couple shakes of Allspice for good luck
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 100g butter
- 175g soft brown sugar
- 1 egg
- 4 tbsp Golden Syrup or treacle
Method:
1. Mix together the flour, spices and bicarbonate of soda.
2. Rub in the butter until it looks like breadcrumbs.
3. Add the sugar.
4. In a separate bowl mix together the egg and golden syrup then add to the dry ingredients.
5. Mix together until it forms a dough. It should feel very sticky, a little like working with peanut butter.
6. Tip out onto a clean, floured work surface and knead for a minute or two until it is smooth.
7. Roll into a ball and place in the fridge for about 20 – 30 minutes. This makes it much easier to roll out.
8. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C with fan, or 195-200°C without.
9. Roll out the dough to about 5 mm thick and use your stencil to cut out shapes.
10. Lay the biscuits on a greased baking tray and bake for 9 – 10 minutes until golden brown. Do not let them crisp up in the oven or they will be too hard later.
11. Cool on a rack or on some paper towels.
12. Decorate.
- For the white base, I used icing sugar mixed with water to form a very thick icing and let this harden before adding other colours.
- For the red noses, I used icing sugar, water and a few drops of red food colouring.
- For eyebrows, I used thick chocolate writing icing with a wide ridged nozzle.
- You can also get fine writing icing pens, edible pink crystals, ready-roll icing, chocolate sprinkles, mini marshmallows and all sorts of lovely decorations from the baking section at your local Sainsburys. Your children will be all too helpful with that particular shopping trip.
13. Wash icing off of children and surfaces. Depending on the ages of the children, this may take a while.
Enjoy!
well done!
