Things to Do – October Half Term 2014
October half term is upon us! Let’s be honest, half of the parents we speak to look forward to half term break as a chance to spend time with their delightful children, whereas the other half’s eyes go wide with terror at the very thought. In the Really Kid Friendly house, the children are wonderful little angels until about 9:45 a.m., after which point we really, really, really need a focal point, an activity, or an excuse for an excursion.
Below are some tried and tested ideas to help you survive – and even enjoy! – October Half Term 2014 with your lovely children.

At the movies: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day
Think you’ve had bad days? Think again! This October, get ready to experience a comedy that takes “having a bad day” to a whole new level. Starring Steve Carell (Anchorman, Despicable Me, Evan Almighty), Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” follows the unfortunate exploits of the Cooper family as they endure a hilariously disastrous day, in which everything that can go wrong does go wrong. As each member of the family encounters their own calamities, they rally together and realize that sometimes you need to have the bad days in order to appreciate the good. Also starring Jennifer Garner, Ed Oxenbould, Dylan Minnette, Kerris Dorsey and Bella Thorne, Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” comes to UK cinemas on 24 October.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left”][/et_pb_text][et_pb_cta admin_label=”Call To Action” title=”Half Term Activities” button_text=”What’s On this Half Term” use_background_color=”on” background_color=”#7EBEC5″ background_layout=”dark” text_orientation=”center” button_url=”http://whatson.reallykidfriendly.com/search?q=Half+Term&location=&from=&to=”]Our ‘What’s On For Kids’ section has hundreds of half term activities across the UK. You could also head to Longleat’s Safari Park with loads of fantastic new animals arriving from all over the globe. Drive through their safari park for an adventure that will take you unbelievably close to creatures you’ve only dreamed about. So mind the zebras crossing, give the rhinos right of way, watch out for the wolves and beware of the meddling monkeys.

Halloween is fast approaching so to get all of the family into the spooky mood, why not begin carving some pumpkins? You could even carve individual pumpkins for each member of your family to create a pumpkin clan. In our experience, letting children loose on slippery pumpkins with sharp carving tools is not a great idea, but they LOVE planning the designs, scooping out the innards and picking out seeds for roasting.

Even the grown-ups will enjoy it (possibly even more, but let’s keep that to ourselves, shall we?). All you need is a large and light blanket or sheet and some cushions to create your little hideout in the house and let them pretend they’re in a tropical rainforest, a cave up in the mountains or somewhere similar. A large box is also a great idea for a cave – this is likely to entertain them for hours and if you’re feeling particularly brave, let them decorate the box so they can personalize their den! If you’re feeling ambitious, have a go at this amazing Cardboard City by Paint on the Ceiling.[/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left”]
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Printable Activities
Seen the movie? Then the kids will love these printable activity sheets – we’ve found they are especially good (for mum and dad) at about 6:01 a.m. when the children are remarkably and frustratingly alert.
