We’ve rounded up the very best things to do in Yorkshire for kids, with ancient ruins, science museums, farm parks, steam engines, Dales walks for families and the most awesome ice cream you’ll ever taste.

If this is your first time visiting Yorkshire with the children, you’re in for a wonderful experience indeed – yes, it rains an awful lot, and yes the narrow little roads are terrifying for foreign drivers, but Yorkshire is easily one of the most spectacular places to go in the UK. There are rolling hills, crags and cliffs, ancient ruins, castles and archaeological sites, and two of the best science museums for kids we’ve ever come across. If the children love animals, Yorkshire’s farm parks are among the best places to watch lambs being born, give the enormous sows a scrub, cuddle guinea pigs, and learn about working farms.

This child friendly National Trust site near Keighley in West Yorkshire is a 17th century manor house and with medieval looks and a ghost-filled past… perfect for brave little souls who want to experience a bit of hands-on history. They also have a nature-themed indoor play area, children’s events and family trails.

A fantastic find for families with young children, Calm Slate Farm is home to Yorkshire Dales Ice Cream parlour and 50s American diner Billy Bob’s. They have the most gorgeous playground ever, with a pirate ship and other beautifully crafted wooden structures, and there are huge covered adventure play areas for under 7s and older kids – perfect for those rainy days!

A day out the kids will remember forever – this magical place is a unique labyrinth with tunnels, hidden chambers, follies and the weirdest most wonderful experiences. An absolute must.

This unique archaeological site in the middle of York is the perfect place to learn about the Vikings. The attraction has creepy but educational animatronic Vikings, interesting Viking artefacts, and some over-enthusiastic drama graduates who really bring history to life.
